Trash is one of the biggest issues in the Jones Falls river. Trash like bottles, cans and Styrofoam float downstream with a rain storm, causing a big mess in the river and the Inner Harbor. So where does it come from? Frankly, it's us. Most trash comes from our vehicles, whether it's something tossed offboard or trash blowing out of the back of trucks. When a trash can blows over or a cup gets dropped, chances are it will wash into a storm drain and into our streams during the next rainfall. Trash also works its way into our stream via
stormwater. However, we still do have issues with illegal dumping in more secluded parts of the watershed, many times from stolen goods or from contractors that don't want to pay dumping fees.
Trash Interceptor
The City is installing a trash interceptor at the outlet of the Jones Falls at the Inner Harbor. A similar concept to the Harris Creek interceptor, floating trash will be caught via a floating fence, then filtered into a nearby dumpster for disposal.
